101 Ways to Move Forward After A Midlife Divorce

Tip # 80. Take your blood pressure. Almost any drug store or pharmacy has one of those machines that will take your blood pressure free of charge. Find one of those. A midlife divorce will definitely cause your blood pressure to go up at certain times. In fact, I think for a while, my blood pressure was at a constant state of “dangerously – GO TO THE HOSPITAL NOW - high.” In fact, I could sometimes actually feel my heart racing when I was talking to my wasband, or when I found out he was still seeing his girlfriend when he said he wasn’t. But there are ways to control that. Not him - yourself. Deep breathing will help. Focused self-calming techniques will help. Taking a walk or going for a bike ride will help. Visualizing positive things will help. But it’s good to know what your numbers are to start with. The literature in the pharmacy or doctor’s office will tell you what the normal range is. Cut down on salt. Drink enough water. Exercise. Google “high blood pressure” and see if any of the symptoms or stresses fit you. Now that I’m past the high blood pressure stage of divorce, I occasionally find it coming back again when I read the news or hear another false campaign ad. I think all of us, regardless of party will feel a sense of relief when this madness is over. I’m confident that our country will survive no matter who is elected. We’ve survived lots of calamities (as a person and as a nation), and we’ll survive these times, as well.
