101 Ways to Move Forward After a Midlife Divorce

Tip # 15. Cry all day if you want to. Order food in. Sob as much as you need to. Give yourself permission. A friend of mine who was a grief counselor for many years said to me, “When you’re grieving you have to give yourself permission to grieve. However, the secret is setting a time limit.” During times of extreme grieving like we have to do during a midlife divorce, we’re sometimes afraid we’ll start crying and not be able to stop. I was worried that if I really let myself go, I would never regain composure. But I did, and you will, too. In fact, sometimes it’s only when we really exhaust ourselves sobbing and moaning and wailing for a time, that we can start getting ourselves back together. Find a safe place to cry as much as you need to. You’ll be surprised at how much better you’ll feel when you’re done.
