101 Ways to Move Forward After a Midlife Divorce

Tip #12. Get a plant. Give it a name. Talk to it. Grumble and grouse about your “stuff” to it. Research shows that plants like music, so sing or play your favorite CDs while you straighten up the room. Be loud enough so that it makes a difference. Plants need tending, and they have a “lust for life,” just like you. Go to a nursery or plant store and ask for help, then buy a houseplant that is easy to grow and will respond to your kindness. Let your plant be your sounding board, so that when you are around human friends, you will have some of that “ugliness” out of your system. However, maybe you should keep your personal “conversations” with Fred the Ficus or Ruby the Rhodedendrun to yourself!
