“Lost – BABY BLANKET, Please call. REWARD.” – Kansas City STAR Classified ads 04/12/08
I was looking in the Classified Ads this morning in hopes of finding someone to put fresh fabric on my lawn chairs so I could put off buying new ones for a few years. In the process of that search I came across the ad above. I’ll bet everyone who has ever had a child or babysat a child or had a niece or nephew has experience with a “blankie.” You can almost feel the desperation in the ad! I will admit right here, even though I don’t have a special blanket, I do have a special pillow. It’s about 10” x 14.” I use it every night and I take it with me when I travel. I fold it in half and put it behind my neck. It’s comfortable, but most of all, it’s reassuring. I also have a small black leather-bound new testament (with the psalms added at the back) that I keep in my purse. My parents gave it to me when I graduated from high school in 1964. It’s hard to believe I’ve carried it around for 44 years! I always think if I’m abducted or the plane is hijacked, I’ll have those two things. Oh yes, and then just for fun, I usually have my fly box in case I’m ever stranded somewhere and I have a chance to go fishing. (No wonder my purse is so heavy!) My point here is that we all need reassuring, comforting things that make us feel safe and ‘at home’ no matter where we are. Especially during the upheaval of a midlife divorce and the recovery journey afterwards, we seem to need those tangible reassurances that everything will be all right. Certain people make me feel like that, too. No matter how bleak things seem, they always help me see that God is in control and that he can use every single happening in my life for good. In fact, the promise goes way above and beyond that. God promises that nothing at all can ever defeat us or separate us from his love ... even when we’ve lost our “blankie,” temporarily.
“For I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from his love. Death can’t, and life can’t. The angels won’t, and all the powers of hell itself cannot keep God’s love away. Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow, or where we are—high above the sky, or in the deepest ocean—nothing will ever be able to separate us from the love of God demonstrated by our Lord Jesus Christ when he died for us.” Romans 8:38-39 (The Living Bible)
